Painted handprints on coffee mugs that weren't used but had a place in the cupboard. Tacky ties that he never wore, but had hanging in the closet. Keychains that weren't right for the business world, yet sat on the expensive wooden desk in his home office.
The sight of it all, childish mememtos and words of love on a day for fathers, he turned away. The sight of it burned and made his eyes water.
He trailed one withered hand along the desk, touching a silver frame on the corner. His boy, so handsome and strong already, a mirror image of what he'd been not so long before.
He sighed and moved away from the frame, swallowing over the lump of bitter regret. He'd leave this all behind. Nothing but a warning for his child.
William let out a raspy chuckle. He'd miss this now that he needed to leave.
