When he's holding onto Dudley's arm, his legs moving in dance steps that he's never forgotten, Woody lets the memory come at him, allows it and remembers for one fleeting moment. They spin, Dudley's amused laugh echoing as Woody thinks back, back to a time when they were all so young, before real jobs, before real responsibilities.
Dudley switches with him, his clumsy movements evening out for once. Woody holds his arm tighter, his breath catching. He remembers, yes, God, he does remember. A ride, just another ride in the summer, the bikes left by the side of the beach, where the grass ended and the sand began.
The afternoon sunlight, the intoxicating scent of beer, of dirt and water, of the cigarettes, the last of their weed long since smoked. He smiles as he holds him, holds him close the way he did then. A hazy, too-warm heat, his eyes watching the trickles of sweat that pattern and race down Dudley's cheek, their lips sliding together in a slow and unsure kiss.
Woody looks at Dudley now and feels a pang of loss. He misses those days, misses what they don't speak about, not since that day. They laugh, they joke, but it's not the same, and there's so much bitterness under the shields he keeps up.
He'll do this for him; he wants Dudley to feel happiness even though his own world is his own personal hell. Dudley laughs again; his body pressing to Woody's and it takes everything he has to push him away, to act like he doesn't remember. He can't dwell, and God, it stings when he walks away.
