Zavier dismounted from his horse, sweat running down his forehead. He swore under his breath, fanning himself with his dusty hat. "Lord, the gates of hell have nothin' on this weather," he said.
Daniel looked up to the sun overhead, squinting under the harsh rays. "We oughta bring the horses into some shade," he murmured. "It can't be good for them to be ridin' so hard in this heat."
"Some animals love bein' ridden hard in the heat," Zavier drawled, tipping a wink at Daniel.
Daniel chuckled and wiped at his face with his lower arm, the sleeves of his shirt long since rolled up to his elbows. "I just bet," he said. "C'mon, there's a spot up ahead."
Zavier hefted himself back up, straddling the horse. They rode at a leisurely pace, a comfortable silence between them. He leaned forward when a group of trees appeared in the distance, the sound of water gradually echoing louder and louder. "Do my eyes deceive me?" he said.
"Not 'less you're ridin' all turned around," Daniel said. He ran his palm over his horse's neck, calming the worn animal. "Easy girl, that's right, almost there."
Zavier licked the sweat from above his lip, eyeing the water greedily. "I don't know about you, but I'm headin' right for that," he said. He dismounted quickly, leading his horse to the shade. He tied her off to one of the low branches and tugged his clothes off, his tanned skin making Daniel's mouth water.
Zavier waded right into the water, a loud exhalation passing his lips. "Fuck yeah...." he said as he walked in deeper, up to his waist.
Daniel chuckled and dismounted as well. He led his horse to the shade, murmuring to her. He tugged his hat off, his hair limp with sweat. "C'mon Dany, you givin' me a strip show or are you playin' shy all the sudden?" Zavier called.
Daniel peeled his damp shirt off, dropping it on the large rocks nearby. "Can't be strippin' without any music, now can I?" he said, unbuttoning his pants as well.
"I can hum a little ditty if you want," Zavier offered, floating on his back.
"How kind of you," Daniel said dryly. He tugged his boots off and pushed his pants down before cautiously approaching the water. Zavier looked over at him, watching him.
"It won't bite ya," he said. Daniel felt the beads of sweat rolling down his back. He swallowed over the lump in his throat and cautiously swiped his foot through the cool water.
"Dany..." Zavier said. He stood up and walked over to him, holding his hand out.
Daniel hesitantly stepped closer, his heart pounding. Zavier took his hand, his broad, calloused palm a comforting, familiar weight. "Easy now," Zavier coaxed, bringing Daniel in slowly. "That's right...nice an' slow, no need t' rush."
"I don't...I...." Daniel stuttered, fear filling his face. "I'll sit here," he said, nodding to the flat rock nearby. "Sit there an' wet my legs."
"Dany, it's too hot for that, Sugar, c'mon in....Nothin's gonna happen," Zavier said patiently, a patience that he reserved strictly for Daniel.
Daniel made a sound in his throat. "Zavier...I don't..." he whispered even as more sweat trickled down his skin, the afternoon sun blazing down, hotter by the minute.
"Jus' like a big bathtub," Zavier said, his wet skin pressing to Daniel's overheated body. "I won't let you go, swear on it." He took a step back, the water up to Daniel's calves. "You love baths, righ'?"
"Y-Yeah..." Daniel breathed, his hand gripping Zavier's arm until his knuckles were white.
"Right, so come on, little further," Zavier said, easing Daniel in gradually until they were waist deep again. "You're not gonna drown. You gotta let that go, sweetheart; you know it wasn't your fault."
Daniel closed his eyes, struggling with the memory. "I jus'...it's hard sometimes," he said, his teeth clenched.
Zavier touched his face, his palm cradling one cheek. "I know, Dany," he said, kissing him. Daniel leaned into the kiss, the cool water making him shiver. Zavier groaned and cupped his face, the kiss growing more heated.
Daniel licked his lips when they parted. "You got a way of getting' me t' do what you want," he said.
Zavier grinned and winked at him again. "That I do," he said. "'Sides, we both needed a wash down." He held Daniel's arm as he dunked his head backwards, wetting his hair and face.
Daniel leaned against Zavier, his heart still beating far too fast. "Shh...easy Dany," Zavier murmured. He cupped one hand in the water, wetting Daniel's face and hair slowly. "There...better, hmm?"
"Yeah..." Daniel sighed, "Much."
Zavier smiled and coaxed Daniel over to a shallower part of the calm river. He sat them on the smooth rocks, Daniel on his lap. He drizzled handfuls of water over Daniel, content to feel his heart beat slowing down, knowing that he was relaxing, and that he had helped to ease his fears a little.
