"Where do you think you're going, Jackie?" Evelyn's voice carried easily through the house.
Jack froze, halfway to the television, his backpack in one hand, and a bag of chips in the other.
"Living room," he said, spotting her in the doorway.
"We discussed this," she chided him kindly. "No television until your homework's completed."
"Aw, Mom," he protested. "We both know your grades need a boost," she said.
"I don't care if I pass or not," he grumbled stubbornly.
"But I do," she said. "I expect you to do more than just pass your classes."
"Yes, Mom," he sighed.
