Long after the Independence Day parade finishes and the sun had slipped from their sight, Dignam sits next to Billy on the grass, close to the water's edge in the Boston Common Park. The general noise only grows around them as the sky darkens, cloudless and black. Billy smiles to see the children nearby, shrieking and tumbling happily in the grass, the splashes of the nearby pond carrying on the slight wind.
He shifts on the grass, the pain in his shoulder a dull ache. Dignam smokes silently, his dark eyes roving over the crowds of people, a hint of suspicion when anyone looks his or Billy's way. Billy says nothing, he's long since grown accustomed to the unspoken possessiveness that Sean has with him. It no longer galls him to be guarded as such. He understands.
The light wind ruffles Billy's hair, the slowly growing strands falling in his eyes every so often. Dignam brushes the strands back absently, his fingertips warm and firm. Billy leans into the touch, his eyes half closed in content.
The hum of noise grows as the first screech fills the air. The sky explodes above them, a burst of vivid red as the fireworks begin. Bursts of red, blue, and white follow, the crowd's exclamations lost in the roar of the display. Billy rests his head to Dignam's shoulder, their hands mere inches apart.
Dignam's lips curl into a smile when he sees the spiraling fireworks, a favorite of his from when he was a child. Billy grins and takes Sean's hand in his own, pointedly ignoring the muffled protest from him. Billy leans against him, smiling widely when Sean's arm wraps around his side, holding him close to his chest. Sean's lips ghost over Billy's ear, strands of his own hair falling out of place from the light wind.
Billy smoothes the strands back, amused by how silky they feel on his fingers. Sean sighs, a whispered word that floats on the air. Billy leans back more. He has no words for his relationship with Sean. It suits him just fine.
